OUR VISION
Together, in Jesus. Empowered, by the Spirit of God. Effective, to fulfil His purpose.

OUR MISSION
1. LOOKING TO GOD
We want a dynamic encounter with Jesus through worship and praise, the truth of scripture and the inspiration and empowerment of the Spirit of God.

2. LOOKING TO ONE ANOTHER
We are open, accessible and authentic.
We recognise the potential of every generation to fully participate in the life of the church family in accountable, loving and caring relationships.
We believe in the power of prayer for physical and spiritual healing.
We believe that all gifts, practical and spiritual, enable the fulfillment of our collective and individual purpose as responsible and generous stewards.
We model the love of Jesus for all: accepting and without judgement, with encouragement and equality.

3. LOOKING TO THE WORLD
We are a bright light, bringing to life the amazing truth of Jesus that God has for our communities.
We are welcoming, hospitable and generous – accepting the needy whoever they are.
We want to be influential within Speen and beyond our boundaries: sharing the relevance and reality of Jesus through effective relationships in neighbouring villages, in local towns, nationally and internationally.

Saturday 17th December 2011 &#124; Rock Star Adventure
At 7.00pm on Saturday 17th December, an audience of 150 watched the 'world premier' of Rock Star Adventure: the Christmas story told in contemporary drama and music.

&#60;img src="http://payload8.cargocollective.com/1/4/140337/2478732/RSA_Final-03.jpg" border="0" width="117" height="166" width_o="117" height_o="166" src_o="http://payload8.cargocollective.com/1/4/140337/2478732/RSA_Final-03_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

The chapel at Speen was the venue for a unique presentation. In a brand new narrative, written for the event, the ancient story came to life with poignant new relevance and humour. Interspersed throughout the piece, 10 classic rock songs, chosen for lyrics that expressed the big themes of the nativity, were performed live by an eleven piece band.

Actors brought a modern interpretation to the key characters. Mary and Joseph: young, unmarried and ultimately refugees; bewildered 'street' shepherds; and the Magi, academics in suits, kneeling before the newborn king: "We understood everything. We understood nothing".

		<description>With its focus on the local towns of High Wycombe and Princes Risborough, the church is actively engaged with important social action projects:
• A team participates in the work of Wycombe Homeless Connection, providing support and care for the homeless of the town. Including regular staffing of the Night Shelter and participation in the mentoring programme, helping vulnerable people to reintegrate and adapt to changing circumstances.
• The church helps meet the practical needs of residents of Saunderton Lodge, a local refuge for individuals and young families who are temporarily without accommodation or basic provisions.
• Support for One Can Trust. The Trust has been formed to facilitate a number of community based projects, such as the One Can Foodbank established to provide people “in crisis” with a short-term free emergency food supply of non-perishable items such as soup, pasta, rice, baked beans, biscuits, cereals etc. Each food parcel provides enough nutritious basic ingredients, together with menu cards, to create a range of meals.
• A team regularly joins the Healing on the Streets initiative in High Wycombe.
• Street Angels meets and supports those out and about (and possibly worse for wear) in the town late on Saturday night.
• A team which includes some of our teenagers, is actively involved in Lighthouse and Breakout children’s outreach initiatives in Princes Risborough.

Internationally, the Church has a bold vision:
• In the Hyderabad region of India it supports a wide range of activities through the charity Agape Alive In India including a school, a bible college and micro-finance projects.

• In Ethiopia, the church supports the work and ministry of a missionary sent from the church four years ago and now actively involved in a church-planting project in the country.

Nicki Pitt  &#124; 5 February 2012
This week the church prayed for those of the church family who are travelling to visit our partners in India and Ethiopia. Nicki discussed the concept of unity. Colossians 3:12-17 reminds of our accountability to one another, under the headship of Jesus: "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace".
We may be more rock than classical; more hip hop than jazz - but we are all music.

Nicki Pitt  &#124; 29 January 2012
Nicki shared on our role to engage those around us in the experience of truth, forgiveness and healing that God uniquely provides: the definition of 'mission' as modelled by Peter and John in the book of Acts and powerfully expressed by the prophet Isaiah (61: 1-3) "The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news.." The muscians echoed the theme during worship with the song 'Everyone Needs Compassion' (Hillsong).

Christmas Lunch &#124; 23 December 2011
There was a warm welcome for the eleven guests invited for lunch on Wednesday 23rd December. The chapel and tables were decorated for the occasion with crackers and party hats. Lunch was prepared and served by members of the Wednesday evening homegroup.

Peter Wortley &#124; 22 January 2012
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/140337/1901404/PWortley_220112.JPG" border="0" width="408" height="276" width_o="408" height_o="276" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/140337/1901404/PWortley_220112_o.JPG" align="left" /&#62;  Peter Wortley
Peter investigated the role model of Paul as a useful template for understanding our relationship with God through Jesus:
- His conversion reminds us that we believe in the supernatural.
- His teaching provides us with much of our understanding of who Jesus was and what Jesus did.
- His example prompts us to evangelism and church planting.
Uncompromising, tenacious and audacious, Paul may take us by surprise, but he is as relevant today as he has ever been.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/140337/1901404/Screen shot 2012-01-09 at 23.52.42_A.png" border="0" width="472" height="90" width_o="472" height_o="90" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/140337/1901404/Screen shot 2012-01-09 at 23.52.42_A_o.png" align="left" /&#62;
On Epiphany Sunday, Steve spoke of the challenge of reconciling the demands of the law with the reality of the human condition. "Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.  But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.”Gal 3:24-25 (KJV) and his own 'epiphany' - a greater understanding of Jesus and his purpose within God's plan: to give eternal life; to bring freedom.

James Entwisle &#124; 1 January 2012
Day one of 2012. James opened the year with a conversation prompted by the words of Jesus, recorded in the 'The Great Commission'. What plans do we have for the coming year? How will these come to fruition and what will God be saying to us through them. How will we respond to His purposes for our lives, individually and collectively? The life of the church in 2012 will undoubtably be influenced by Social Action and Pastoral Support, and driven by a purposeful sense of community, here and further afield; in our workplaces, our homes, our neighbourhoods and towns.
Listen to the conversation

Carols by Candlelight  &#124; 24 December 2011
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/140337/1901404/Carols_1.JPG" border="0" width="516" height="324" width_o="516" height_o="324" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/140337/1901404/Carols_1_o.JPG" align="left" /&#62;
In a packed chapel, seven lessons of the Christmas story, from the prophecy of Isaiah to the arrival of the Magi, were read by members of the community representing local organisations. Musicians and singers led the carols and James Entwisle spoke on the 'gift of giving': defined by the ultimate Christmas gift, Jesus. Timely words at the heart of a busy Christmas season. The giving was generous: £370 to Wycombe Homeless Connection, all the proceeds from the evening's offering. Mince pies and sausage rolls followed by a few rounds at the King William 4th concluded a terrific evening.

Dan Blundell &#124; 18 December 2011
The forth Sunday of Advent. An extraordinary Pantomime, with standout performances from authentically made-up young people, brought some of Mary's experience to life in a...colourful way. Dan Blundell spoke on her amazing story of the unexpected: from her bewildered encounter with the angel, and the discovery that she will be the unmarried teenage mum of Jesus, the Son of God! As Christmas approaches, Advent leads us to consider how prepared we are for the unexpected.
Listen to Dan's sermon and watch the Pantomime:

Nicki Pitt &#124; 11 December 2011
The third Sunday of Advent and Nicki considered the prophecy fulfilled: the birth and ministry of John the Baptist. Luke 3:1-6 portrays John as the unconventional messenger, living in the wilderness and eating locusts and honey. Yet, inspired by the Holy Spirit, he spoke the truth of the coming Jesus and the people sought him out and were baptised. He prepared the way where he was, and we can do the same: in the workplace, school and neighbourhood. His words and ways were surprising (certainly to the religious elite who were no doubt taken aback when he identified them as a 'brood of vipers'!), but he is authentic and effective as the 'voice in the wilderness' and we can all learn from him. Worship included Matt Redman's 'Dancing Generation' "Your glory taught us how to shout, to lift Your name in all the earth, and we’ll shout to the praise of Your glory". Absolutely.

Helen Cook &#124; 4 December 2011
The second Sunday of Advent, and Helen asked if 'we are prepared?': not just for the upcoming Christmas season, but in lifestyle, body and spirit. Isaiah 40 illuminates with the powerful metaphor of the 'road to Christ'. What are the roadblocks, potholes and cracking that disrupts our journey and slows us down? What do we need to do in life to prepare the way for the coming Saviour and make ready to welcome Jesus? It's all about clearing up in anticipation of the most honoured guest. 2000 years ago, no one was ready: not Mary, not Joseph. Certainly not shepherds and Wise Men! The more we sort stuff out in our own lives, the more we can expect to see the 'glory of the Lord revealed'

On Advent Sunday, a few weeks before we celebrate the first coming of Jesus at Christmas, Peter spent some time considering the second coming. 2nd Peter 3 poses the questions: "what kind of people are we"; as we anticipate "a new heaven and a new earth". Do we live wholesome and healthy lives "found spotless, blameless and at peace with him" and consistent with God's plan for the 'home of righteousness'? Challenging and encouraging as we are reminded of God's absolute acceptance, his joy in all that he created, as he sees Jesus in each of us. Peter is Moderator at Speen Church.

Ann Fradgley &#124; 20 November 2011
Ann shed new light on the familiar story of the Prodigal Son. Readings from Luke 11 were juxtaposed with a contemporary narrative exploring the idea of 'Homecoming'. The unconditional love the father shows to the lost son, even as he squanders a fortune, and the joy and celebration upon his return all point us to the infinite love God has for each one of us. We spent some time looking at Rembrandt's painting 'The Return of the Prodigal Son' which powerfully illustrates the moment of reconciliation. Ann is a Theology undergraduate at Regents College, Oxford University

Remembrance Sunday &#124; 13 November 2011
Remembrance was marked with 2 minutes silence at 11am followed by the laying of wreaths at the lych gate by Mel Foster and Greg Cook on behalf of the District Council and RAF respectively. Paul Cornelius, from Food for the Hungry, spoke on the origins of poverty, found at the moment man broke with God's original purpose, and the real solution that Jesus provides through healed relationships and reconciliation with God. Powerful stuff.

New Wine conference, Shepton Mallet &#124; August 2011
Pretty much the whole Church attends one of two week-long summer conferences at the Bath &#38; West Showground in Somerset. Happy memories of time spent together, sharing in amazing worship, teaching and the powerful evidence of God at work across the country and throughout the world.

		<description> Speen Church is more than just the activities that take place in the building each week. We also seek to provide care and support for one another both within the church family and wider community.
This includes prayer and practical help, listening and encouraging one another, and running parenting and marriage courses from time to time to help equip us for the challenges of life.
For more information, please contact pastoralcare@speenchurch.org

 Prayer Network
1 Peter 5v7, God encourages us to cast all our cares on Him because He cares for us. Prayer is one of the ways we can enter into a dialogue and living relationship with Him and when we do this He responds: in ways that are invariably beyond our imagination. When circumstances become overwhelming, situations change unexpectedly; our ability to cope on our own is sometimes called into question.

The Prayer Network team undertakes to pray for those people and situations: confidentially and appropriately.

If you or someone you know would value this support, please send an email to prayernetwork@speenchurch.org
The detail can be as full or as limited as you wish.
We only communicate with the Network participants and no information is distributed.

 Marriage Course
The Marriage Course is for any couple, whether you have been together for one year or 61 years and whether you feel you have a strong relationship or are struggling.
 www.relationshipcentral.org/marriage-course
Please contact pastoralcare@speenchurch.org for further information about our next course

 Parenting Course
Being a parent is a wonderful thing, however it is not always easy. Time Out for Parents is designed to build your confidence as a parent as you discover techniques to guide, nurture and encourage your child through the joys and challenges of parenthood.
 www.parenting.org.uk
Please contact pastoralcare@speenchurch.org for further information about our next course

Freedom in Christ
Becoming a Christian is the first step on an exciting journey with Jesus. Freedom in Christ is a discipleship course which encourages Christians to seize hold of the Truth about Jesus that sets us free from the baggage of the past and enables us to move on into maturity.

		<description>This is what what Church means to us:
It's about people: Living, working and existing together in relationships, with one another; and in a personal relationship with Jesus with the living God. Empowered by the spirit of God to make a difference, through patience, compassion and love. It's about being effective to fulfill God's purposes as individuals and as a collective and to have a positive impact on communities near us and far away, from the unique perspective of a small village in the Chilterns.

Below is short summary of life at Speen Church. If you would like to know more, we would love to hear from you. Please get in touch.
By email: info@speenchurch.org
By phone: 01494 488875

These are the three 'pillars' that help us meet God and know him better:

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/140337/1901483/Numbers-02.jpg" border="0" width="35" height="79" width_o="35" height_o="79" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/140337/1901483/Numbers-02_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
Teaching
Teaching is bible-based and endeavours to help us focus on a deepening relationship with God: seeking his will for us individually and collectively, and seeing his plans revealed and purposes fulfilled in our lives and within the wider community.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/140337/1901483/Numbers-03.jpg" border="0" width="53" height="79" width_o="53" height_o="79" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/140337/1901483/Numbers-03_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
Prayer Ministry
We have seen God reveal His will, His healing and His deliverance in the power of His spirit through prayer. Various groups meet to pray for specific needs; home groups provide an important forum for personal concerns; Freedom in Christ is a valuable resource and the church participates in the 24-7 Prayer initiative .

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/140337/1901483/Numbers-04.jpg" border="0" width="57" height="85" width_o="57" height_o="85" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/140337/1901483/Numbers-04_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
Worship
Worship in music is central. Thoughtful, purposeful and contemporary in style, a team of ‘Lead Worshippers’ along with an inspirational and talented band (which includes several from our youth group) facilitate worship at Sunday services, as well as homegroups and other church meetings.

Speen Church is self-governed and independently financed. It is part of the Baptist Family of Churches. It supports and is supported by the Baptist Union of Great Britain and works with regional representatives to ensure best practice. It supports BMS and is in contact with a Link Missionary. The church operates a Safe to Grow policy and has two elected child advocates.
The leadership team comprises 7 Deacons. All are elected by the membership for a three-year term.

We desire to see the young people in our fellowship growing as faithful disciples of Jesus rooted and established in the love and truth of our Lord Jesus Christ so that in the days ahead they will be able to stand firm in their faith and relationship with God.

To know that they are valued, loved and completely accepted.
That they are important in Gods plan and purposes and have a destiny in God which we can explore together .
That they are precious to us and to God, that He has entrusted them into our care for us to love them and teach them on their journey to be the people God has created them to be.
